<p>Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages' USR project, "OUR TOWN Community Sustainable Cross-Domain Collaborative Platform Project," held the final special lecture of this semester's Stories Interviewing Editors Community on June 28. Teachers and students from Wenzao, as well as anyone interested in local history and culture, were invited to attend. This lecture was once again taught by Professor Ou from the Department of Applied Chinese. She discussed the evolution and significance of Confucian thought, the connection between religion and Confucianism, and provided an in-depth introduction to the distinctive local shantangs and fu-luan culture. This lecture summarized the relationship between Confucianism and the common people, bringing this semester's activities to a perfect conclusion.</p>

<p>Professor Ou began her lecture by sharing the story of the hermit from the "Analects of Confucius, Weizi." She reminded the participants of the core idea of orthodox Confucianism&mdash;the significance of "ren" (benevolence). "Ren" signifies a loving heart, an empathetic heart that extends to others, and an active heart that encourages people to not only adhere to the principle of "Do not impose on others what you do not desire yourself" but also to practice "Help others achieve what you wish to achieve yourself." This means that we should not only refrain from imposing our dislikes on others but also actively assist and support others, and take joy in their success. From personal moral cultivation and family harmony to societal governance, this practice of "empathy" and "self-discipline and adherence to propriety" is deeply rooted in our standards of interaction and conduct. It has an immensely positive influence on the harmony of contemporary society.</p>

<p>In the second half of the lecture, Professor Ou focused on the relationship between Confucianism and religion. The term "Confucianism" encompasses different forms, representing both the indoctrination of Confucian teachings and the religious aspects of Confucianism. Faith activities primarily driven by Confucian indoctrination are usually led by the government, with Confucius, Supreme Sage Master, as the principal deity. The core beliefs are derived from Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi, with rituals centered around expressing gratitude to teachers. The Kaohsiung Confucius Temple is one such important site for Confucian indoctrination. On the other hand, the religious aspect of Confucianism is more often driven by the people themselves, encompassing a belief system that includes various deities from Buddhism, Taoism, and local faiths, who are willing to listen to the daily prayers of their followers. These deities are not only worshipped by scholars but are integral to the broader community. For example, Kaohsiung's Chi Ming Hall&nbsp; enshrines Koxinga, the God Emperor Guansheng, and Yue Fei, with Confucius himself worshipped in the rear hall. These deities hold significant places in local beliefs, and their integration with Confucianism showcases Taiwan's unique phenomenon of religious fusion.</p>

<p>In this lecture, participants not only gained a deeper understanding of the relationship between Confucianism and the common people but also developed a more profound insight into the practical application of Confucian principles in contemporary society. The "OUR TOWN Community Sustainable Cross-Domain Collaborative Platform Project" aims to enhance the cultural literacy and knowledge of participants through themed lectures, connecting local beliefs, cultural venues, and the community. This allows more people to understand the land that nurtures us, and by combining their interview, editing, and writing skills, they contribute to the promotion of local revitalization and the old town of Zuoying. The "Community Story Interview and Editing Group" has successfully concluded its activities for this semester. We will launch the project again next semester and look forward to meeting all the participants in Zuoying Old Town!</p>

<p>Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages' University Social Responsibility Practice Program, &ldquo;OUR TOWN Community Sustainable Cross-Domain Collaborative Platform Project&rdquo; includes five community activities. One of these, the " Stories Interviewing Editors Community," held its third special lecture of the semester on May 24th. The lecture featured Professor Xiou-Mei Ou from the Department of Applied Chinese at Wenzao, who discussed the stories of Confucian temples in Taiwanese temples. Through this lecture, participants explored the mysteries of Taiwanese temples alongside Professor Ou.</p>
<p></div><div class="ffb-id-796phd00 fg-paragraph ff-richtext text-left    content-p-style1 fg-text-dark"></p>
<p>The lecture began with Professor Ou sharing his story of being introduced to Confucianism. Thirty years ago, when his grandmother was hospitalized, a Confucian elder's sharing made him realize that Confucianism was not just confined to books but deeply embedded in every corner of life. This experience led him to pay attention to and study local folklore and the influence of Confucianism in daily life. He recalled that during his university years, a teacher from Harbin shared a local custom: if a child cried at night, parents would place the "Analects of Confucius" under the child's pillow, believing it would soothe the child. This made him deeply appreciate the practical application and influence of the "Analects" in folk beliefs. Professor Ou pointed out that the influence of Confucianism is ubiquitous in Taiwanese folk culture. From people's politeness and humility to the respect for the elderly and love for the young in families, traces of Confucian teachings are evident. These traditional values invisibly shape societal harmony and stability.</p>

<p>In the second half of the lecture, Professor Ou introduced the Confucius Hall at Shansi Temple in Tainan and explained in detail how the depictions of Confucius' activities illustrate core Confucian values such as benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness. He emphasized the importance of these values in modern society. Confucianism, he noted, is not just theoretical but is practiced in daily life to solve practical problems, such as praying for family peace and children's health. Professor Ou highlighted the significance of the "self-cultivation, family regulation, state governance, and world peace" philosophy for modern governance. From personal cultivation to family harmony and social governance, Confucian ethics and interpersonal harmony profoundly impact modern society's stability and harmony. He also mentioned the application of Confucianism in modern business management, emphasizing the "people-oriented" concept. Many successful entrepreneurs incorporate "benevolence" and "integrity" as core business values, enhancing the company's social image and increasing employee cohesion and loyalty. This management approach demonstrates the practical value of Confucianism in contemporary society, providing powerful motivation for long-term business development.</p>

<p>Through this lecture, participants not only learned about the stories of Confucian temples in Taiwanese temples but also deeply appreciated the practical value of Confucianism in modern life. With his rich knowledge and vivid storytelling, Professor Xiou-Mei Ou vividly showcased the core values of Confucianism. The &ldquo;OUR TOWN Community Sustainable Cross-Domain Collaborative Platform Project&rdquo; aims to enhance local connections through various community activities, helping people understand local culture and promoting regional revitalization. In the future, the project will continue to invite scholars to launch a series of activities and lectures, making the greatest effort to practice university social responsibility. The &ldquo;Stories Interviewing Editors Community&rdquo; will also invite Professor Xiou-Mei Ou again on June 28th for the final lecture of the semester, and participants are encouraged to seize the opportunity to attend!</p>

<p>Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages' University Social Responsibility Practice Program, &ldquo;OUR TOWN Community Sustainable Cross-Domain Collaborative Platform Project&rdquo; held its second thematic seminar of Stories Interviewing Editors Community on April 25th. We were honored to have retired Professor Xu from Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages to further elaborate on the evolution of Confucianism and the unique perspectives of other Confucian scholars different from Confucius. Besides learning about their history and anecdotes, exploring the clash of ideas added a unique element of interest to the entire seminar.</p>
<p></div><div class="ffb-id-796phd00 fg-paragraph ff-richtext text-left    content-p-style1 fg-text-dark"></p>
<p>In contrast to the theme of the first lecture, Professor Han-chang Hsu focused this session on another great Confucian thinker&mdash;Mencius. Mencius, as a philosopher of the Warring States period, advocated for "benevolence" (仁) as the central ideal despite the prevailing self-interest among rulers of various states. He boldly challenged the aggressive and oppressive practices of feudal lords, promoting the doctrine of "benevolent governance" to alleviate the suffering of the people.</p>
<p>Mencius believed that rulers should prioritize the well-being of the people by understanding their lives and empathizing with their joys, anger, grief, pleasure, love, hatred, and desires. Only in the condition of &ldquo;when a ruler rejoices in the joy of his people, people also rejoice in his joy; when he grieves at the sorrow of his people, they also grieve at his sorrow,&rdquo; can they be regarded as benevolent rulers. Leaders who sympathize with the populace and exhibit kindness towards all living beings can foster a harmonious and prosperous society.</p>
<p>This people-centric concept of governance serves as a timeless lesson, particularly relevant in our era of frequent political changes and evolving societal dynamics.</p>

<p>Under Professor Xu&rsquo;s guidance, the Stories Interviewing Editors Community&rsquo;s seminar concluded successfully. The aim of the &ldquo;OUR TOWN Community Sustainable Cross-Domain Collaborative Platform Project&rdquo; is to provide participants with rich educational opportunities, enabling them not only to enhance their literary skills but also to reflect, analyze, and refine their interviewing and editing abilities through community learning. Participants are encouraged to apply their learning back to our local community, contributing to the promotion of Zuoying's old town and showcasing the vitality and charm of this land to an increasing number of people.</p>

Through comprehensive and understandable teaching, participants were able to glimpse the ideological revolution brought about by &ldquo;benevolence, righteousness, manners, wisdom, and credit&rdquo;, and its impact on the development of modern thinking. <p>The theme of this lecture is "First Lecture | What Did Confucius Teach Us?" with Professor Xu as the main speaker. Professor Xu first introduced us to Confucius's background and the story of his early career, as well as the evaluations of him by later generations. From Mencius, Xunzi, and Han Feizi, to Records of the Grand Historian, Book of Han, and Book of Later Han, we can see how Confucius influenced the intellectual atmosphere and moral standards of the entire Central Plains with his personal character and insights.</p>

<p>Just like his discussions with students on the topic of "What is the Way of Learning," as recorded in the "Analects" in the "Li Ren" chapter: The Master said, "Shen, my doctrine is that of an all-pervading unity.&rdquo; Zeng said, &ldquo;The doctrine of our master is to be true to the principles of our nature and the benevolent exercise of them to others, this and nothing more.&rdquo; These two passages clearly illustrate that learning involves establishing a central axis, setting goals, and then integrating this ideology into various aspects of life. Based on Confuscius&rsquo; mindset, only if one can understand the principle of sincerity and benevolence, &ldquo;loving others&rdquo; and &ldquo;respecting others&rdquo;, and having sympathy for others, can they achieve success in all endeavors. In just a few words, Confucius emphasizes the importance of "perseverance" and "empathy." Even more than two thousand years later, aren't these two principles still the most valued when it comes to human interaction?</p>

<p>OUR TOWN Community Sustainable Cross-Domain Collaborative Platform Project-The Stories Interviewing Editors Community aims not only to enhance the interviewing and editing skills of community members but also hopes to bring positive impacts to the local community. From personal insights into Confucian spirit and interpretations of "benevolence" to the relationship between Confucianism and the local community culture, history, and stories in Zuoying, we can see the close and inseparable connection between the two. The community will continue to explore more local culture and ideas with members and learn from the changes brought about by it. We aim to view the beauty and diversity of this land from a deeper, broader, and more professional perspective while leaving vivid records for this land.</p>

<p>On December 12, 2023, the "OUR TOWN Community Sustainability Interdisciplinary Co-Creation Platform Project" held its fourth Interview Editing Course. Under the guidance of Prof. Wu, the students explored freely in the field of interviews, gaining a deep understanding of the overall logical structure behind interviews. They learned how to modify the interview framework and context based on actual situations, producing articles that are both in-depth and informative.</p>

<p>Firstly, Prof. Wu held a small competition, allowing participants to compare different interview frameworks. Through this game, they identified their strengths and learned from each other. Prof. Wu also emphasized the importance of leaving a positive impression to interviewees. For example, consistently staring at electronic devices usually made others feel awkward, which might lead to the difficulty of breaking down barrier and data collection. In addition, Prof. Wu reminded that the basis of equality and mutual respect between the interviewer and interviewee are crucial. Besides learning the value of empathy for others, interviewers should learn how to avoid asking offensive or aggressive questions. Through natural interaction and conversation, the interviewee will unconsciously lower their guard and come up with natural and in-depth responses. At this stage, the interviewer has more opportunity to progressively do deeper into topics. After that, by timely adding one's own perspectives and interpretations, a report with personal characteristics and content richness can be produced.</p>

<p>After participating in four courses, the participants are now capable of independently forming interview frameworks and refining their articles to maintain a fluent and logical academic style. Besides the class, several students have begun field investigations, trying to lead interviews with residents individually. The aim is to help participating students to apply what they have learned in class in reality and find out more local stories and legends in Zuoying. For example, the participating students Mr. Ko and Mrs. Wang shared their interview outcomes in class. The topic of Mr. Ko 's interview is the history and local legends of Yuandi Temple, and the interviewee is Brother Lai, a retired military officer. Through Brother Lai's detailed explanations, we gained insights into the period when Yuandi Temple was under construction, the local belief on Yuandi, and the role Yuandi Temple plays in this community. On the other hand, Mrs. Wang focused on the topic of the Guo's Century Old House with the interviewee, Mrs. Xue, the manager of the Old House. Via her detailed introduction, we take a close look on the challenges of preserving old houses and gain awareness of the importance of cultural heritage. After her narration, everyone gains a better understanding of the journey of Guo's Century Old House successfully transforming from ruins to a tourist homestay, connecting between local culture and history.</p>

<p>The "OUR TOWN Community Sustainability Interdisciplinary Co-Creation Platform Project" aims not only to provide interview editing education but also to promote the culture, history, and rich local stories of the local community. The goal of this project is to make the rich old stories in the community more widely known through this platform, inspiring more people to explore Zuoying. By conducting promotional activities there, the project creates more chances to have attention to the local community as well as contributes to the sustainable development of the community. These interview outcomes not only enrich the students' on-site experiences but also leave clear records of the history and culture of Zuoying.</p>

<p>In this writing course, Mr. Wu first invited participants to share their assignments from the previous week's course, in which they were asked to use what they had learned in the classroom to weave people, events, times, places, and things into a poem or a story. Among them, Ms. Fang Ling's poem successfully incorporated the old town of Zuoying, revealing her deep affection for the local culture and history of Zuoying. Next, each participant conducted a time-limited mock interview exercise as a warm-up activity for the day's program.</p>
<p></div><div class="ffb-id-79re7k12 fg-paragraph ff-richtext text-left    content-p-style1 fg-text-dark"></p>
<p>Through the practice of interviewing each other, the participants were able to learn more about each other's values and backgrounds. Mr. Wu emphasized the importance of asking questions with sensitivity and guiding the interviewees to share deeper content. The simulated interviews helped to develop the participants' communication skills in real-life situations and enabled them to respond flexibly to various interview scenarios. In this process, the example of the project facilitator, Ms. Mei-Fei, and the participant, Ms. Wang Shih-Ching, highlighted once again how the interaction of the interviews allowed for a closer bond to be established between participants who were originally unfamiliar with each other. This not only helps to promote cooperation and collaboration among participants, but also enhances the overall sense of participation and motivation in the course.</p>

<p>Apart from developing participants' oral expression and logical thinking skills, this activity also emphasizes on the interviewer's purpose and time management throughout the process. Interviewers need to clearly understand the purpose of their interviews and achieve their objectives effectively within the limited time available. This not only helps to train the participants' professionalism, but also develops their strain capacity to cope with real-life challenges. Through the simulated interviewing game, the principles and basic structure of interviewing are conveyed, explaining that interviews are conducted with a clear purpose, out of "curiosity" and the desire to get "feedback" from the respondents as the starting point, and illustrating the methods of information collection and analysis, how to plan and execute, as well as the relevance, importance and impact of the factors of venue and time on the interviews.</p>

<p>"The OUR TOWN Community Sustainability Cross-District Co-Creation Platform Project" aims not only to provide interviews and editorial instruction, but also to promote the culture, history, and rich local stories of Zuoying's local community. We hope that through the program, the richness of the old stories contained in the community will become more widely known, thus inspiring more people to come to Zuoying to explore the area. By doing so, we will not only create more opportunities in Zuoying, but also help to promote the sustainability of the community. We hope to raise awareness of the local character and make Zuoying's uniqueness recognized in a wider context.</p>

<p>"The Stories Interviewing Editors Community" held its second interviewing editing course on October 31st at PAMMA CAFFEE. The aim of this activity was to allow participants to explore the basic principles and skills of writing, and to experience how to transform their personal thoughts into compelling words. At the beginning of the program, Mr. Wu emphasized on the preparation and basic knowledge of writing, and guided the students to understand the basic structure of writing, including the elements of storytelling structure, such as the beginning, the end, the end and the end.</p>

<p>In this course, Mr. Wu introduced improvised solitaire writing by playing a relaxing game, in which students were asked to write a short story in collaboration with other members of the group within a specified period of time. The aim of the game is to encourage students to think quickly and turn their ideas into words, and at the same time to cultivate the inspiration of writing. After the game, Mr. Wu used the way that the group commented on each other's work to share their reading experience, so that the students could understand that everyone can be a little writer, and asked them to comment and analyze the writing styles and skills of different members, which was also the main idea that Mr. Wu wanted to convey to the students in this course.</p>

<p>The most interesting part of the program was the exchange of writing and discussion. While appreciating each other's writing, we were also puzzled and amused by the vocabulary and phrases that popped up out of the blue. In this regard, apart from giving constructive suggestions to each other, the participants also put forward their own ideas on areas that need to be improved, e.g., the purpose of a certain event needs to be described in a specific way in order to contextualize the writing and to help the readers to understand the context. For example, the purpose of an event needs to be clearly and specifically described so that the context of the article can be connected and the reader will not be confused when reading. The article solitaire game not only provided valuable feedback for each group member, but also allowed for more interaction among the community participants and strengthened their writing skills.</p>

<p>Through this activity, participants realized that writing can be a simple concept, and that with basic skills and structure, they can create compelling short essays. The focus of this course is to understand the universal structure of writing, including the direction of the story, the beginning, the end and the end, as well as how to use words to interact with the readers. In the next course, participants will be asked to adapt the stories they have collected and write a piece of writing with their own personal characteristics. Future courses will continue to focus on developing participants' writing skills so that they can be more confident in dealing with a wide range of writing challenges.</p>

<p>On October 17, 2023, the "OUR TOWN Community Sustainability Interdisciplinary Co-Creation Platform Project" held its first Community Interview Editing Course, which mainly recruited people from outside the school. In order to let the participants get to know each other initially, Prof. Wu asked them to take turns in explaining their own motivation for participating and briefly introducing themselves. This was followed by an overview of future course planning, explaining what interview editing is and the basic structure of interview editing, so that participants could have a better understanding of the course to come, and could also ask relevant questions to prepare for future course activities.</p>

<p>Participants in this program were of a wide range of ages, and all were interested in and knowledgeable about community stories, including many residents of the local community and even the neighborhood representative of Zuoying. The purpose of this community is not only to interview editing, but also to promote the culture, history, and local stories of Zuoying's local community. It is hoped that the old stories of the community will become more widely known, thus attracting more people to explore Zuoying and creating more opportunities for the local community.</p>
